An Introduction To MultiAgent Systems 2nd edition, Read Online books in PDF, EPUB, TueblendAmyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also called Lou Gehrig's disease, is a motor neuron disease characterized by the progressive degeneration of the upper and lower motor neurons. Approximately 10% of ALS cases are familial ALS (FALS), which are often associated with mutations in the gene encoding the protein Cu,Zn superoxide dismutase (SOD1). In addition, an increasing number of environmental causes for ALS have been reported. ALS results in progressive muscle wasting, paralysis, and eventually death.
The most common symptoms of ALS are weakness, loss of muscle tone, and muscle wasting. Spinal cord and brain stem motor neurons are selectively vulnerable in ALS. These neurons also have the highest levels of SOD1 and other oxidative stress-associated markers. ALS is a unique neurodegenerative disorder because it affects only a subset of neurons and no other cell types. In addition, most ALS cases are sporadic, not familial, in nature. Therefore, the normal aging process, such as a decrease in neurons and an increase in free radicals, cannot explain the etiology of the disease.
ALS is a progressive disease that typically takes 3 to 5 years to reach a stage where death occurs. Most patients have symptoms for 6 to 18 months before death and the main symptom at the end stage is death from respiratory failure. Consequently, more than half of all patients die within 2 years of diagnosis. Many ALS patients die within 2 to be359ba680
